The pandemic isn’t any closer to reaching an end in most parts of the world, but many are sticking together to find solutions and ways to cope. When the pandemic struck, it forced nearly all public events from taking place at a physical location and have been held on a completely digital platform instead; the same goes for Summer Games Done Quick 2020.

The switch to a digital landscape didn’t change their charitable vision and the organizers still made it happen. From August 16th to August 23rd, participants and donors raised over $2.3 million in funds to give to charity. Check out their announcement below:

Summer Games Done Quick is just one of the events this group holds each year. It’s a fundraising organization that raises money for other organizations by highlighting incredible completion times (AKA “speedrunning”) from volunteers willing to donate their time. Some games that were played included Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Kid Icarus, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Portal games, Bloodstained series, and many more.

All monetary donations garnered during the event are placed into a pool and then given to an organization of their choice. This year’s Summer Games Done Quick will be allocating funds to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières), an international medical humanitarian aid organizations that provides professional medical care in more than 70 countries across the globe based on need

According to Games Done Quick’s website, “Their work aids people based solely on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation. MSF is committed to safeguarding their patients’ right to autonomy, confidentiality, and informed consent. 90% of their staff is national, meaning they live locally and are from the country that they work in. MSF relies mainly on the generosity of individual donors, with over 90 percent of MSF’s income coming from private donors giving small amounts.”

Summer Games Done Quick achieved an incredible feat by amassing $2.3 million for Doctors Without Borders in a few short days. Now this is what it means to be a gamer!
