Starfield’s Map Is Bethesda’s Biggest, Says Todd Howard

Starfield Reportedly Almost Became A PS5 Timed Exclusive Prior To Microsoft Acquisition

Many eyes have been on Bethesda as of late thanks to the acquisition by Microsoft, and while a few of their games are still chugging along, some have wondered about upcoming titles. That said, Bethesda boss Todd Howard recently spoke about the upcoming Starfield and the game’s map.

During the recent Develop: Brighton conference (via PC Gamer), Howard shared a few details about Starfield in an interview. According to him, the upcoming game will feature a map that is larger than that found in Fallout 76, which is four times larger than Skyrim’s map. Howard noted that in order to create that large of a map, a portion of it will be procedurally generated. He said that this tool is good for creating large areas quickly, with notable features such as landmarks being created by hand.

While talking about Starfield, Howard also stated how they plan to essentially overhaul Bethesda’s Creation engine. According to him, the improvements will be a “larger jump in quality than that from Morrowind to Oblivion.” He also mentions how said improvements will include AI, animation, and rendering. Of course, we won’t know exactly how big these improvements will be until we see more about Bethesda’s upcoming game.

Starfield is currently in development and expected to arrive at some point in the future. What we do know, however, is that it will be available on Game Pass at launch.
