Star Wars: KOTOR 2 Almost Went Total Dark Side With Yoda In Original Storyboard

KOTOR 2

It’s Star Wars week! The perfect time too celebrate the iconic franchise by re-watching all of the movies and binge-playing your favourite games set in a galaxy far, far away. One beloved title is the acclaimed Knights of the Old Republic sequel that garnered quite the loyal following. That being said, the first game’s designer had a few secrets to clue us in on – including the crazy twist they had originally planned for our esteemed mentor Yoda!

James Ohlen recently sat down in a new interview to discuss the franchise and what different directions the game took throughout the BioWare/Obsidian exchange. The creator director dropped a huge bomb when he revealed that the creative team really wanted to implement a giant plot twist that centered around everyone’s favorite paragon for good. Here’s what he had to say concerning Creative’s thought process about Evil Yoda:

The initial twist in the first two-page concept we had for Knights of the Old Republic 2 was you were going to be trained by a Yoda-like figure, someone from the Yoda race. That character was going to train you in the first part of the game, but then you were going to discover this Yoda figure was actually not the good Yoda you expected… He was training you to essentially be his enforcer, a Dark Lord to conquer the universe, and he was going to become the main villain.”

Luckily, the higher ups at BioWare eventually squashed that direction in an effort to still make sense with the general canon. It was a very smart idea – though everyone likes a good twist, to do so merely for the shock factor could have turned ugly very quickly. Ohlen added, “It was a very smart decision on their part. In order for a company to be successful and control its own destiny, you need to own your own IP, and we didn’t own Dungeons & Dragons or Star WarsMass Effect was something we decided we had to do instead of another Star Wars game.”
