Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's Hero Is Human To Prevent Alienating Players, Says Respawn

Star Wars fans are waiting for what will be a very rewarding end of the year in this beautiful 2019. Not only will this December bring the end of the Skywalker saga films with The Rise Of Skywalker, but November will also see the first ever live action Star Wars television series, The Mandalorian, as well as the hot new video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Many have expressed excitement over the game’s new characters, but others have expressed some disappointment over what they believe to be a rote human protagonist. Now, Respawn Entertainment has spoken about why a human Fallen Order protagonist was chosen over an alien species.

GameInformer recently interviewed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order director Stig Asmussen about their choices regarding the story and characters. Aside from confirming that a female protagonist was not chosen due to not wanting to seem too similar to the current movies spotlighting Rey, it seems that an alien species was being considered for the player character as well. Unfortunately, this was scrapped due to wanting the player to feel the deepest connection with the player character possible, as Asmussen states:

Ultimately we didn’t go with an alien race because we felt like, no pun intended, that would alienate a lot of people. We wanted to make sure that there was a real human connection to the character we have in the game. That’s the broader decision of why we did it, personally I think it would be really cool to have an alien protagonist.”

This fear can certainly be seen across other sci-fi games, like the Mass Effect series and the Beyond Good and Evil games, as they feature numerous alien characters, but only let the players control a human. This also does not explain why this protagonist had to be a typical white male protagonist, but overlooking audience demographics, it could very well be just due to a casting choice. It would be nice to see a game in the future break this mold, and if anyone could survive any commercial impact, it would definitely be Star Wars. You bet we’d love to play as an Ewok or Jawa Jedi and rip into some stormtroopers like they’re toilet paper.
