Sonic Movie Sequel Lands 2022 Release Date (VIDEO)
Though blockbusters have released few and far between in 2020, one of the arguable (and literal) frontrunners of the competition has been Paramount’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Hitting theaters just ahead of nationwide COVID-19 shutdowns, the long-awaited video game movie quickly became a record-breaking favorite at the box office and went on to be an even bigger mainstay as a home digital release. Paramount Pictures appears to be rolling with this lightning-fast momentum, confirming a release date for a Sonic movie sequel set for 2022.
As covered recently by Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently on track to release in theaters on April 8th, 2022. No other details were revealed in Paramount’s announcement, but director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are set to return to develop the fast-paced follow-up. Actors such as Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey are also expected to reprise their respective roles as Sonic and Robotnik, but the outlet notes that official casting details aren’t set in stone as of yet. The blue blur’s voice actor recently celebrated the new Sonic movie sequel in a humorous post on social media.

As the global pandemic continues to halt audiences from flocking to theaters, many of the year’s biggest openings have been officially pushed back, with the likes of DC’s Wonder Woman 1984, Disney’s live-action Mulan, and Marvel’s Black Widow now seeing repeated delays in the name of public safety. While still quite a ways off, Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s planned 2022 release certainly seems like it might be a more realistic time to return to theaters. However, as delays are still happening with many big productions, it’s possible the Sonic movie sequel might still end up a bit further ahead than intended.
