Sonic the Hedgehog Comics Canceled as SEGA’s Partnership with Archie Comics Ends
After 24 years of memories and over 290 issues with the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, SEGA of America and Archie Comics have announced an end to their partnership and this series. Fortunately, not all is lost. Sonic will continue on in comics through a different publisher, but the contents to come remains a mystery. Via their Twitter account for the franchise, SEGA made an official statement to address some concerns:
After 24 years of memorable storytelling, SEGA of America will conclude their Sonic the Hedgehog publishing partnership program with Archie Comics. This does not mark the end of Sonic in comics, but signifies SEGA of America’s decision to take a different direction for the series that will be announced at a later date. SEGA would like to thank Sonic’s amazing fans and their loyalty and passion over all the years. SEGA looks forward to providing more information soon.”
The reason for the termination between the two was not specified, but the lack of publication for issues number 291 through 293, even though they were advertised, may hint at a deeper issue. That also leaves anticipating fans of Sonic Mega Drive: Overdrive in the dust, but author Tyson Hesse addressed concerns directed to his end. Though the series is finished, they have not been printed for viewing pleasure. At this point, for those looking forward to see how the arc continues, further legal actions will need to proceed.
However, it seems likely that the storylines created with Archie Comics may discontinue since SEGA specified their desire for “a different direction”. For anyone that keeps up with the publisher’s website, the news may not be any sort of revelation since the subscription line for Sonic the Hedgehog comics were removed some time ago. Hell, perhaps more information will be revealed this week at San Diego Comic Con? What are your hopes for Sonic the Hedgehog comics?
