New Xbox ‘Lockhart’ Console Rumored For Reveal Next Month

Xbox Series X

With the next-generation of consoles all but arrived, gamers are already preparing a spot on their shelves for the incoming hardware launch. While both Sony and Microsoft have divulged a fair amount of their plans for the Holiday 2020 season, a recent rumor suggests the Microsoft brand still has another big announcement on the way in the form of a new Xbox console with the nickname ‘Lockhart.’

According to a round-up of rumors from Windows Central, a big Xbox-themed event is reportedly gearing up for sometime next month, where looks at new next-gen games and hardware are expected to be part of the proceedings. More importantly, this event is supposedly setting up the debut of the long-rumored Lockhart version of the Xbox Series X (potentially called the ‘Series S’), which has been slated as a modestly-priced and disc-less alternative to the mainline platform. Little was divulged about how this “entry-point” console might differ from the Series X, but the report’s expected 4 teraflops GPU suggests hardware might be significantly lowered.

This new Xbox version was rumored by the outlet to have begun “take home stages” for Lockhart, allowing console developers to get their hands on the hardware as well as provide “feedback and testing.” This internal test period is said to indicate that the console is near-ready to be revealed during an unannounced May event likely taking place “early” next month. This reported timeframe isn’t being held in stone, as recent COVID-19-related quarantines could push the reveal further than anticipated. With E3 2020 on the outs this year, Xbox is noted as having a number of options when it comes to its announcements and could always opt to space them apart.

Of course, it’s still best to approach unconfirmed rumors such as this with caution until being officially confirmed by Microsoft. However, this rumor may hold a bit more water when compared with our past coverage of the rumored new Xbox Lockhart. A leak spanning back to the beginning of 2019 previously foretold the existence of the low-end next-gen device, providing a number of supposed specs, and even offering up the familiar figure of 4 teraflops GPU.

What do you think? Are you hoping to see this new Xbox version revealed next month, or are you still all-aboard the Series X train for the time being? Does the Lockhart name have you thinking of Tifa from Final Fantasy VII?
