Resident Evil Movie Gets Official Title, Adapts First Two Games

Resident Evil Movie Reboot

After officially wrapping filming late last year, fans are eagerly awaiting the first look at the upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot. There have been an assortment of unofficial behind-the-scenes photos and a subtly nostalgic poster revealed for the film, but the adaptation’s stunning cast has yet to be seen in their iconic roles from the storied horror franchise. While it appears we’ll be waiting a bit longer on that front, new details have been revealed about the movie itself, including an official title.

As revealed by IGN, the title for the Resident Evil movie is ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,’ with director Johannes Roberts revealing the news in an interview at the week’s SXSW online event. He also confirmed the film will take place in the year 1998 and adapts events from the first two games in the series: Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2. Based on this decision, the movie also includes characters from both titles such as Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, as well as Chris and Claire Redfield.

Even more interesting information was gleaned from the full interview with IGN’s Lucy O’Brien, with Roberts providing an idea of how far the Resident Evil movie went in adapting the source material. According to the chat, the production worked alongside Capcom to provide an especially authentic aesthetic, with iconic locations like Spencer Mansion and RPD station recreated from 1:1 designs of the games. As an added flourish, some scenes are even said to replicate the fixed camera angles from the original RE titles.

The full interview can be viewed in the video below.

Learning new details and getting an official title for the Resident Evil movie is sure to have fans excited, if not, set the tone for the intense, city-wide zombie invasion to come. If this upcoming film isn’t enough, plenty more adaptations are currently in the works, with the Capcom franchise also preparing a live-action spin-off as well as the CGI animated series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, which is set to debut on Netflix later in 2021. On the other hand, there’s also a new game on the horizon in Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is set to release on September 3rd, 2021.
