Resident Evil 2 Remake: Should You Play The Leon Or Claire Path First?

Resident Evil 2 Remake: Should You Play The Leon Or Claire Path First?

Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 Remake is finally here, and fans that have been eager to sink their teeth into the retelling of one of the most popular survival horror games ever are finally beginning to do just that. There is one option, though, that the game presents to players upon booting it up: Do you play through Leon’s story first, or Claire’s? While it is chiefly up to each player’s preferences, we take a look at some of the differences between each path below:

Leon Kennedy

Leon’s path takes players into the heart of the Raccoon City Police Department and down into the depths below, and is already considered by many to be the ‘standard’ way to play through the Resident Evil 2 Remake. His available weaponry is fairly straightforward, bouncing between a few different hand pistols, a shotgun, and a chemical burner for some sweet, flame-hurling action.

Claire Redfield

Claire’s path more or less follows Leon’s, though it begins to really branch off once she ventures down to the parking garage below the RPD. As far as weapons go, Claire’s armament is a bit more varied, with her having the ability to choose from a six-shooter, a couple of standard 9mm pistols, a submachine gun, and later the ‘Spark Shot’ weapon.

Verdict

There are a few notable differences between each available path, with varying character interactions and a few different story beats mixing things up as players go along. My personal recommendation is for newcomers to the series to begin with Leon’s path; his story dives deepest into the Umbrella conspiracy, and his no-frills weaponry is a good launching point for those fumbling their way around the RPD for the first time. In comparison, Claire’s varied weapon choices and differing story beats should be no problem to Resident Evil veterans, and going from Claire’s A playthrough to Leon’s B playthrough should be pretty seamless.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Our full review of the game can be read right here.
