Resident Evil Netflix Series Confirmed, First Details

Much to the appreciation of fans, adaptations of popular video video games are springing up every which way these days, with big budget movies and streaming service Netflix making a great many of these a reality as of late. Stunning anime such as Castlevania have already developed a strong following on the online platform, as has their upcoming show based on The Witcher, despite not having been released as of yet. Well, it appears fans now have a Resident Evil Netflix adaptation to look forward to in the future.

According to Deadline, a new Netflix Original is on the way based on Capcom’s popular zombie-spawning series Resident Evil. The outlet claims a full series is being produced by the streaming giant, with German studio Constantin Film handling the filming. The general plan for the series is reported to keep the same “basic premise” of the game, the outlet elaborating the idea to “expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the exiting mythology.”

The drama series will explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. While the project is in early stages, the series is expected to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and ‘easter eggs.'”

Not much else regarding the Resident Evil series is known as of yet, but the search for a showrunner is supposedly underway. If all works out correctly, a Resident Evil Netflix series could be an exciting time for fans of the long-running survival horror franchise. The games notably saw their first live-action outing in Paul W. S. Anderson’s six-part movie series. These films, while not without their own stylish merit, weren’t the most faithful to the original games, leaving series veterans ravenous for a proper retelling of the series.

Perhaps Netflix is the place for that to finally happen, but without more details or even official confirmation from Netflix, its honestly too early to tell. That being said, the above notion of “expanding the Resident Evil universe” could be a pretty interesting one, as it could leave the door open for side stories in the same undead setting, not necessarily a retelling of the story fans already know. Again, it’s currently up in the air whether this may be the case, but it could be pretty interesting nonetheless.
