Red Dead Redemption 2 “Hot Coffee” Mod Lands In Hot Water With Take-Two (VIDEO)
As has become internet legend, 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas once contained an unused mini-game that portrayed a sexual encounter between main character CJ and his in-game girlfriend. Dubbed “Hot Coffee,” modders soon discovered the scene and made it fully playable as part of the main game. The availability of such spicy content, though in mod form, memorably sparked massive controversy, prompting the ESRB to temporarily change the game’s rating to “Adults Only.” Now it seems Rockstar is involved in another adult moment as a new Hot Coffee mod has recently brought the infamous mini-game into Red Dead Redemption 2.
Created by modder Unlosing, the mod makes use of in-game assets from Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly ones used in the single-player bar mission where players get drunk with Lenny. All assets from the mod are repurposed from the original game, with suggestive grunts derived from character injury sounds and the activity itself taken from horseriding animations. The mod itself doesn’t necessarily add anything, nor is there any nudity involved in the scenes. However, it has nonetheless drawn the attention of Rockstar and Take-Two, who appears to have removed the Hot Coffee mod from download on NexusMods.

As revealed in a recent interview with Eurogamer, Unlosing expressed defiance when first met with a takedown notice from Take-Two, as they believe that they are in the right in this situation. The modder referenced an email received from the company citing several violations to Rockstar’s End User Licence Agreement, which is said to prohibit users from “creating, uploading, or posting material that is vulgar, obscene, sexually-oriented, or inconsistent with community standards.” The “sexually-oriented” part is what the email said, “is causing particular concern.”
“Honestly I don’t think it’s fair at all,” Unlosing said. “The mod doesn’t enable anything that was previously hidden by the devs, and only uses animations/audio that are still used in the game (like a lot of RDR2/GTA scripts).” As this exchange happened a few days ago, the modder also claimed that they didn’t see the mod going away anytime soon. However, Hot Coffee has since been hidden on NexusMods and whether or not it will resurface remains to be seen. Regardless of who is right in the situation, perhaps it’s for the best that the mod lay low while the modders work things out with Take-Two and Rockstar.
