Niantic Announces Pokemon Go-Style Harry Potter Mobile Game

Harry Potter Mobile AR Game

The massive success and cultural ubiquity of Pokemon Go on mobile devices last year led to many conversations about the future of mobile gaming. One of the most frequent topics tended to be theorizing which other major pop culture franchises would adopt the Augmented Reality presentation style that Pokemon Go brought to the mainstream’s attention. One franchise that many felt would lend itself quite readily to an augmented reality mobile game would be the world of Harry Potter, given its fixation on hidden magic in the normal world. Now, it appears that this hypothetical dream for many will be a reality, as a new Harry Potter mobile AR game has been announced.

Niantic, Inc., the developer that created Pokemon Go in conjunction with Google and Nintendo, has announced today that they are working on a new Harry Potter mobile AR game in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, who hold the video game rights to J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. The game will be titled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and promises that players will “learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”

Not much additional information about the game has been given, but it sounds like the game will use mechanics similar to Pokemon Go, such as the real world map-focused discovery and AR camera usage, while promising new features and gameplay aspects not seen in Pokemon Go. Here’s hoping that when this game does actually release, it will learn from Pokemon Go’s past mistakes so players can enjoy hunting down Horcruxes with nary an obstacle and being up to no good.
