PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Creator Doesn’t Want A Game Of The Year Award

Battlegrounds Creator discusses Game of The Year

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds made quite the splash in the gaming world ever since it arrived on Steam’s early access program earlier this year. Despite its frequent server issues and the sporadic maintenance blackouts that resulted from them, PUBG garnered a massive community, and as a result broke the record for concurrent users on Steam. Given that developer Bluehole’s popular battle royale game has cleared so many hurdles and is quickly making its way to consoles, one would think that both the Battlegrounds creator Brendan Greene and his team would be pushing for the highly lauded Game of The Year award. That said, while PUBG has certainly been nominated for the award, Greene doesn’t think the game deserves it.

In a recent interview with IGN, Brendan Greene said that “I don’t want to win a Game of the Year award,” admitting that while he would love to get the win for his team, he believes that there have been better – and more deserving – games that have been released throughout the year. The two titles Greene specifically mentioned are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn, stating that both games are “masterpieces of game design and storytelling.”

They’re just wonderful, wonderful games… I think they will probably win it. I would hope they would win it.”

As for Greene’s team at Bluehole, its CEO – C.H. Kim – echoed the sentiments of the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds creator, admitting that “We’re really not interested in” whether or not they deserve certain awards, and are instead focusing on “bringing the best gameplay to [Xbox Game Preview] and the PC version.” All that being said, while some may think that PUBG should be disqualified from being nominated given its current status as ‘early access’, Kim suggested that voters should “just look at the game itself,” and not its label. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now available on PC, with the Xbox One Game Preview version arriving on December 12, 2017.
