Players Trailer Reveals ESports Comedy Release Date (VIDEO)
The streaming wars have only continued to escalate as more competitors enter the battle for streaming supremacy. While appealing to video game fans has been a big part of the plans these streaming services have been making lately, that has mostly been in the form of direct adaptations of classic video game franchises like Castelvania and Halo. ESports has been an aspect of gaming culture to rise in popularity the past decade, and now the mainstream is looking to honor that part of gaming culture. Such is the case with the new Players trailer that focuses on the world of ESports.
Paramount has released the first Players trailer on their official Paramount Plus YouTube channel. The series will focus on a fictional League of Legends (which Riot Games has offered full use of their IP for the series) ESports team named Fugitive Gaming. The team has risen to become one of the top teams in the digital sport, with their star player having been a veteran pro named “Creamcheese” for their seven year history. To remain competitive, the team looks to recruit a 17-year old prodigy named “Organizm” to give the team a boost. It seems the big central tension and plot will come from the generational clash between Creamcheese and Organizm.
The Players trailer shows off much of the series’s ensemble cast, including the aforementioned Misha Brooks as Creamcheese and Da’Jour Jones as Organizm. Other cast members seen in the trailer include Moses Storm as Guru, Ely Henry as Kyle Baxton and Luke Tennie as Rudy Elmore. Famous League of Legends commentator Froskurinn is also seen to add some comedic commentary on Fugitive Gaming’s history seen through documentary-style flashbacks. Players is set to premiere on June 16th exclusively on Paramount Plus, and it sure looks like it could be the nexus of gaming comedy.
