Okami Sequel Seemingly Confirmed By Original Creators

Even after more than a decade, Okami has proven to be an exceptionally memorable experience, the game’s distinct Japanese imagery, gameplay, and lore crafting an adventure that players can’t help but continuously revisit. While the 2006 title has been re-released numerous times in the past, a full sequel still has yet to come to fruition. However, it appears the series’ long hiatus may be coming to an end as a sequel has now seemingly been confirmed.

In a recent Twitter post from former Ghostwire: Tokyo director and Okami artist Ikumi Nakamura, a video was shared featuring her and Okami director Hideki Kamiya making an announcement regarding a potential sequel. “Okami is going to be back,” Kamiya said in the footage, a statement to which Nakamura replies, “Really?” before Kamiya ultimately confirms with a simple “Really.” Check it out below.

A casual reveal such as this isn’t the most official of confirmations but nonetheless vastly increases the likelihood of the long-awaited sequel. The re-teaming of Hideki Kamiya and Ikumi Nakamura would surely offer another reason to hold out excitement, as the two had previously worked on the original Okami as creative director and artist respectively. Meeting and sending Twitter into a frenzy could be the duo’s way of getting hype for an Okami sequel across to Capcom (who was tagged in the tweet), especially as the publisher has recently expressed interest in continuing some of the company’s dormant franchises.

Ikumi Nakamura’s tweet also arrives little over a month after leaving Ghostwire: Tokyo studio Tango Gameworks, officially departing her position as the game’s creative director. As many on the internet are aware, Nakamura became the designated “queen of E3” following her enthusiastic and “spooky” presentation at the event, leaving many to wonder where she might show up after officially leaving the Ghostwire project. Could this seeming Okami “confirmation” with Hideki Kamiya turn out to be her next project? That much isn’t apparent, but at least this image of the two of them exists.
