Nintendo Switch VR Could Be Coming As Soon As This Year

Nintendo has been a brand well-known for their peripherals, producing varyingly iconic controllers such as the NES Zapper and the GameCube‘s infamously-enduring Donkey Konga bongo drums. Even today, Big N continues to be increasingly experimental with their hardware, as evident by the papercraft Labo sets currently gracing the Nintendo Switch. It appears another avenue may now be in the works, as a new report suggests Nintendo Switch VR could be coming sometime this year.

According to a number of sources with Nintendo World Report, the Switch may be going in an immersive new direction as immediately as 2019. The outlet claims Nintendo is mulling over plans to announce VR capabilities for the Nintendo Switch, with several VR-enabled titles set to potentially launch soon thereafter.

The report references a number of stories that have circulated over the last few years lending themselves to the idea of Nintendo’s VR aspirations. Evidence such as a VR mode discovered by data miners (via CNET) and a patent application for a Switch-sized headset (via Arts Technica) have kept the capability just outside the realm of confirmation.

It was only last year when Nintendo was considerably coy regarding virtual reality, more-or-less stating it was way too early to consider a format that hasn’t become fully mainstream. However in the time since, one could argue VR is as popular as ever with the presence of numerous high-profile titles and hardware receiving updated iterations on a semi-regular basis.

Nintendo Switch

While a Nintendo Switch VR device may be a bit late to the party, the company has an understandable reason to be apprehensive about extra-dimensional gaming. Big N notably attempted VR back in the 90s with the Virtual Boy, the device infamous for its extremely poor sales and nauseatingly ineffective immersion. As today’s very capable VR landscape makes a blunder like this a difficult act to repeat, its likely Nintendo’s eye for innovation would produce something much more worthwhile this time around.
