Nintendo Switch sales

Nintendo has had a successful time in the video game industry for nearly four decades, the company has only continued to endure. While it has ebbed and flowed, Nintendo’s console sales have thrived well with their latest device, the Nintendo Switch. The console proved to be quite a hit through its versatility as both a home and portable console. Exclusive titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons also helped entice returning and new audiences as well. Now, the console has reached a huge milestone with Nintendo Switch sales finally surpassing 100 million units, which surpasses the lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo has updated their official website with their latest Nintendo Switch sales data, as of December 31st, 2021. The Switch’s lifetime sales have reached 103.54 million units sold, up from 92.87 since the quarter before. This puts the Switch past the lifetime sales of the Wii console, which amounts to 101.63 million sales. This would make it the best-selling home console ever for the company, with only the portable Game Boy and Nintendo DS left surpassing it. The Switch has especially sold well since the start of the pandemic, with new Pokemon and Animal Crossing games bringing in more gamers than ever.

Along with news of the sales, the company has released updates to its forecast in 2022. Nintendo now expects a 3.1% increase in sales and 7.7% increase in operating profit, with software sales expected to reach 230 million this year alone. However, Nintendo Switch sales forecasts are expected to drop from 24 million to 23 million units in 2022, largely due to the semiconductor chip shortages caused by the pandemic leading to manufacturing bottlenecks. Still, that puts the Switch on track to potentially surpass the Game Boy’s lifetime sales and make way towards being the best-selling Nintendo device ever. Now the Switch really is playing with power. Nintendo Power.
