Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed the Mortal Kombat movie R Rating on a new poster released on their official Mortal Kombat movie Twitter account. The Motion Picture Association of America (or MPAA) has officially rated the reboot film R for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, and some crude references.” This seemed the likely rating for the film, according to comments made before by the studio and its creative leads.

The film’s first red-band trailer essentially confirmed this already, as red-band trailers are typically given the designation if they contain content that would be worthy of an R-rating. The gory fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero towards the end of the trailer all but assured a mature-rated outcome. Given the series’s iconic use of blood and violent finishing moves, the only way to remain authentic would be to make the fatalities in the film as cartoonishly violent as possible. While this may mean losing some audience segments, ultimately, it will likely mean fans will be getting the gory Mortal Kombat movie of their dreams. Certainly, when we see this movie, we’ll all collectively say in a high-pitched voice, “Toasty!”
