Microsoft Studios Officially Cancels ‘Scalebound’

Scalebound

Announced back in 2015, Scalebound is an action role playing game (RPG) that has been highly anticipated for Xbox One gamers. Now it seems that Microsoft Studios is parting ways with developers Platinum Games and has ceased production of the game.

As stated from a Microsoft representative:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.”

The game was to be an Xbox One exclusive and directed by Hideki Kamiya (Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2). In Scalebound, players would be able to play as Drew, who is accompanied by a dragon by the name of Thuban. The two are bound together and rely on each other for survival. If Thuban dies, so does Drew. Players would be able to give commands to the dragon as well as take control of Thuban through a first-person view. At 2016’s E3, Microsoft had brought new gameplay footage of the game’s multiplayer aspects. Up to four player could cooperatively defeat enemies as well as level up and customize their dragons. It’s unfortunate that the game has been cancelled. There has been no official word as to whether or not the intellectual property (IP) belongs to Microsoft Studios or Platinum Games, but if it belongs to the latter, there is a slight possibility we may still see the finished game in the future. Microsoft is headed for a big year in 2017. Not just in gaming titles, but Project Scorpio is also due to release later in the year. With a heavy flow of IPs and new hardware on the horizon, Xbox certainly has a full plate.
