Mark Hamill’s Idea for Luke Skywalker and Han Solo’s Reunion Would Have Been Heartbreaking (VIDEO)
As wonderful of a movie as Star Wars: The Force Awakens was, it was also disheartening knowing that Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo never had their chance to reunite during the movie. The subtle yet meaningful friendship between the smuggler and the moisture farmer from Tatooine permeated its way across the original trilogy, and a reunion between the two was on most Star Wars fans’ checklists for The Force Awakens. Alas, it was not to be. While Leia Organa and Han Solo were given a heartfelt reunion, Luke Skywalker found himself on both a literal and figurative island of solitude, showing up for about a minute of screen time at the end of the movie before the credits rolled. Unfortunately, Han Solo met his demise at the hands of his son, Kylo Ren, before he had a chance to meet up with his brother-in-law.
Despite Luke and Han never getting their chance at a happy reunion Mark Hamill, who is returning to play Luke Skywalker in this December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, had a well-thought out idea of how a reunion between the three (four if we’re counting Chewie) iconic characters from the original series would have taken place. In an interview with Fandango, Hamill suggested that after Leia fails to contact Luke through the force, she will attempt to rush to Han Solo’s aid. “She’ll get close to him and then get into some dire situation and that’s when [Luke shows] up.” Hamill goes on to suggest that Luke would “Save her life, we rush to Han, and then we’re in the same position that Rey, and Finn and Chewie are. Too late to save him, but witnesses.”

As heartbreaking as it was to see Han Solo’s demise, it would have been an even more emotionally-charged scene had Leia and Luke been there to witness Han Solo’s death at the hand of Leia’s son and Luke’s former apprentice. Hamill laments that the way the scene played out ended up being a missed opportunity. “Because it would carry so much emotional resonance into the next film, for us, his wife, his best friend to witness,” he said. “Instead of two characters that had known him what, twenty minutes?”
Obviously, had the events taken place the way Hamill suggested it should have, then we most likely would not have been treated to that stellar final fight scene between Rey and Kylo Ren, where the former finally opens herself to the Force and gains the upper hand against him. There are plenty of ways the scene could have played out differently had Luke been there. Unfortunately, Rey will have to tell Luke what happened to his old friend face to face (if he didn’t already sense it) at the beginning of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, arriving in theaters December 15, 2017.
