Tolkien’s ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Getting The AAA MMO Treatment
The works of Tolkien have inspired a lot of media over the years from movies, games, and even TV shows. Many of these projects delve into the story of Bilbo, Frodo, and the One Ring, even though there is a multitude of content to explore within the world of Arda and the lands of Middle Earth. Thankfully a new Lord of the Rings MMO is coming.
Athlon Games recently announced that they signed a new long-term licensing agreement with Middle-Earth Enterprises in order to develop and publish a new game based upon the Lord of the Rings. While the title will be based upon the iconic franchise, it will actually take place before the events of Frodo’s quest to destroy the One Ring and will supposedly include “lands, people, and creatures never seen before by fans.” A comment from Dave Miller, president at Athlon Games, briefly touched upon what the developers hope to accomplish with the upcoming title:
It’s a singular opportunity to work closely with Middle-earth Enterprises to create a completely new experience for fans of the landmark fantasy work of J.R.R. Tolkien, and we are excited about the resurgence of interest in The Lord of the Rings IP. This, along with several other major properties Athlon is working with, will help us to further our goal of creating AAA cooperative console and PC experiences that gamers will want to play for years to come.”
There is no release date mentioned as of yet, which is understandable being freshly announced. There’s also no set platform the title will appear on, though the press release indicated that they hope to bring “cooperative console and PC ” experiences. Where in history of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth do you want to see the game take players to? Let us know your thoughts on this new AAA Lord of the Rings MMO and more in the comments section below.
