Kevin Hart Officially Cast As Roland In The Borderlands Movie

Kevin Hart

As film and television productions begin to resume under COVID-safe guidelines, many of the next major media projects happen to be adaptations of popular video game franchises. Netflix has resumed filming of The Witcher season 2 with Henry Cavill, and the live-action Uncharted movie is already in post-production. Another project known to be in the works has been the live-action Borderlands movie at Lionsgate. Reports previously indicated that Kevin Hart was in talks to star in the film, but nothing official confirmed Hart was actually part of the film. Now, it looks like the talks between Hart and Lionsgate have completed, leaving him ready to begin filming for his role.

The Hollywood Reporter shared the confirmation that Kevin Hart has officially joined the cast of the live-action Borderlands movie. Hart had reportedly been in talks with the studio Lionsgate for months, with word of this first being broken back in December by The Illuminerdi. The comedian-turned-actor will be portraying Roland, the “Soldier” class playable character from the first Borderlands game. Director of the Borderlands film, Eli Roth, said the following about Kevin Hart:

“I’m thrilled to be working with Kevin. Borderlands is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before. He’s going to be an amazing Roland.”

Kevin Hart will be joining Cate Blanchette, who is confirmed to portray Lilith, the “Siren” class playable character from the first game. Given these roles, it is likely the film might adapt the story of the first game, though, it is not yet confirmed if Mordecai and Brick, the other playable characters from the first game, will be in the film as well. Hart is no stranger to video game film projects, as he recently starred in two Jumanji films which pivoted into a video game-related plot rather than a board game-themed story. Filming for the Borderlands project may soon begin in Budapest, so hopefully, Hart can get one of his comedian friends like Ken Jeong to be the voice of Claptrap. That would be a dream come true.
