John Cena Confirmed For Starring Role In Duke Nukem Movie

Duke Nukem Movie

Adapting intellectual properties such as video games into movies is a difficult thing. Many adaptations have been largely unsuccessful in the past however with the recent release of the rebooted Tomb Raider film, the tides may be changing. A Duke Nukem movie is next in line to be a success at the box office and while the film has been known to be in the works for a while now, fans finally have confirmation that wrestler and actor John Cena will be taking the lead role.

The upcoming film will come from Platinum Dunes, a company that’s been responsible for movies such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street, and more horror-related titles. Adapting a film around the character will be difficult because at his core Duke is a “politically incorrect and aggressive jerk.” In the case of films like Deadpool and the upcoming sequel, it’s necessary to find the right tone to present these characters. Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, the movie’s producers, sat down in a recent interview to explain how they are taking a cue from DP himself:

You know that having a misogynistic guy in today’s world, how do you make that fun and lovable and at the same time he’s got to be an incredible badass, so those are the things that we’re struggling with and we’re going to try and come out with what I hope is a really fun ride. That’s the goal, is for it to be a really fun ride.”

Having this kind of character will only work if the correct actor is in play to bring out that twisted charm the character is known for. John Cena was recently reported to be in talks to play the Duke himself and now Form has confirmed that as of right now, he is on board as their guy. Form did explain however that they don’t have a script yet and if Cena doesn’t like the progress, there may be ways to pull out of the production.

The Duke Nukem games were an excellent satirical parody of overly excessive masculinity and pop culture that could be hilarious if done properly. What kind of tone would be best for the Duke Nukem movie? Are you ready to see John Cena take on aliens as a super macho, wise-cracking badass?
