Studio MDHR Confirms iOS Cuphead App Store Listing Is a Scam
One of the biggest success stories from the indie gaming scene this year has been Cuphead, which enamored gamers with its stunning 1930s animation style and compelling, but challenging, gameplay. Cuphead proved to be a commercial success, and has garnered many awards, including several awards at The Game Awards recently. However, the title’s accolades have attracted others trying to maliciously profit on the game’s success. The Android marketplace was recently flooded with bootleg listings for Cuphead games, none of which officially were made by Studio MDHR, who developed the game. Now, a scam iOS Cuphead listing has been spotted today, and Studio MDHR has acknowledged its illegitimacy.
There is a Cuphead imposter app on the iOS store — this is a scam. We are working on removing the fraudulent app ASAP!

The official Studio MDHR Twitter account has acknowledged that the iOS Cuphead listing on the Apple App Store is indeed a scam, and confirmed that they sought to have Apple remove the app from the App Store. Their petition appears to have worked, as the scam Cuphead listing is no longer available, as of the morning of December 18th. This listing came as a surprise to many, given the stricter approval process that Apple has with new incoming apps in its App Store, compared to Android’s more relaxed standards.
When this illegitimate iOS Cuphead game was available for $4.99, it did feature touch controls, but also inferior animation and lower-quality backgrounds compared to the main version. The listing also included a link to a fake website, studiomdhrgames.com, created for this scam. There’s no word yet on how this scam app appeared on the App Store, nor if Cuphead will legitimately arrive on iOS in the future, but hopefully, this fiasco wasn’t a ‘Deal with the Devil’ gone wrong.
