Guillermo del Toro Not “Involved Creatively” with Death Stranding

Guillermo del Toro Death Stranding

Ever since the very obscure trailer for Kojima Productions‘ Death Stranding was shown at the 2016 E3 conference, we have all been patiently awaiting further details about the game. Details are definitely something we haven’t got much of, but we did get another trailer for the enigmatic game at the 2016 Game Awards. In the second trailer, we saw the brilliant movie director, Guillermo del Toro in computer animated form. So how involved is del Toro with Death Stranding?

Fans of Hideo Kojima’s work are well aware of the bad break up between himself and video game developer and publisher, Konami. The last project that Kojima was involved in with Konami was the Silent Hills playable trailer, known commonly as P.T. The Silent Hills game was to be a collaboration with Guillermo del Toro and Kojima, and to star The Walking Dead actor, Norman Reedus, but was cancelled shortly before Hideo’s departure from Konami. In Death Stranding’s first trailer we did see Norman Reedus back in video game form and in the second we see del Toro. Although the three have reunited, del Toro says that he is just “a puppet in his [Kojima’s] hands.”

In a recent interview, Guillermo del Toro says that Hideo Kojima is single handedly responsible for Death Stranding. It seems that Kojima just wanted a good friend to be in his first big project with his new studio:

“I’m involved as a character. Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all. This is entirely Kojima-san’s game. I think it’s gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it.”

Del Toro may not be involved creatively, but it is nice to see that something good came from their original team-up. As far as Death Stranding is concerned, well, we will have to continue waiting for more information on the bizarre, yet very Kojima title. That’s okay though, in Hideo we trust. What do you think of the trailers released so far? Are you anxious to get more info on the title? Let us know in the comments section and stay tuned with DFTG for all of your gaming news.
