Fortnite Dev Confirms ‘Erebus’ Definitely Not PlayStation 5
While this current console generation seems like it began only a few minutes ago, the next generation is nonetheless quickly on its way. One side of this approaching home console coin is Sony’s PlayStation 5, a system long wound in the rumor mill due to released concept art and a slew of targeted features. A recent development claimed the hardware was in the works under the codename “Erebus,” a fitting moniker given it’s godly Greek connotations with darkness and the number 5. However, Fortnite has stepped in to take that over as well.
Despite the seemingly perfect parallels, it now looks as though this name was mistakenly associated. The revelation comes by way of Epic Games’ Arjan Brussee on Twitter, who confirmed the name was not used under Sony, but by the team behind the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite. Brussee explained that “Erebus” was the battle royale’s codename before the full port was announced, explaining the references in Unreal Engine 4 code.

It doesn’t get much more conclusive than a response from someone at Epic Games, especially since the studio created UE4. Come to think of it, “Erebus” may have made for a spot-on codename as the name conveys the Nintendo port’s shadowy development as well as its existence as Fortnite’s 5th available platform. Unfortunately, this leaves us with one less detail regarding the PlayStation 5, a shame considering we already know comparatively more about the next Xbox.
What do you think? Are you bummed the PlayStation 5 doesn’t have an awesome Greek god name, or are you enjoying the Fortnite turn of events?
