Fallout 76 Won’t Have Cross-Platform Play Thanks To Sony, Says Director
When Bethesda announced that Fallout 76 would heavily feature a multiplayer component, fans of the series were divided upon whether or not that was a good thing. Now that the developer has provided some much-needed clarification on the matter, fans are beginning to warm to the idea. unfortunately, though, it appears that any multiplayer component within Fallout 76 will not feature cross-platform play, and according to Bethesda’s Todd Howard, it is all Sony’s fault.
In a recent interview with gamestar.de, Howard was asked if Fallout 76 would feature cross-platform functionality. Howard responded by saying, “We would love to do that, but right now that’s not possible.” He then added that “Sony isn’t being as helpful as we want them to be.” It has unfortunately become commonplace to hear that Sony is continuing to fend off its “cross-play attackers,” though hearing push back from a leading development company suggests that things may be beginning to heat up in Sony’s hotbox of isolation.
This isn’t the first time Sony has been criticized for saying no to cross-play, either. The above ad is for a Minecraft cross-play trailer, with the developer throwing Sony directly under the boss for its lack of participation in cross-platform play. It is difficult to forget the cross-play issues that Fortnite players ran into as well once the Epic Games title was released for the Nintendo Switch. Gamers that attempted to login on the Switch using a Fortnite account that was initially created through Sony were unable to do so, and not even unlinking the account from the PlayStation Network would resolve the issue.
On Sony’s part, the company has admitted recently that it is looking into PS4 cross-play possibilities, and is listening to the rampant feedback behind its deplorable stance regarding the feature. Here’s hoping that a happy resolution is found quickly enough that Fallout 76 cross-platform play is still a possibility.
Fallout 76 launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 14, 2018.
