EA Executives Talk Bigger Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the Future of Battlefield

A Eurpoean investor briefing yesterday brought to light new information about the Battlefield 1 and Star Wars Battlefront 2 franchises respectively. CFO of EA, Blake Jorgensen, spoke on a number of topics, most notably the future of some of their hottest games. Your excitement will depend largely on which game you’re more interested in, but the news is good for gamers regardless.

“We won’t have another Battlefield for a couple of years.”

Jorgensen confirmed at the Nasdaq speaking event that there wont be another Battlefield in the near future. This could mean we likely won’t  be seeing another installment until 2018 at the earliest. With the excitement over Battlefield 1 it makes sense that we may not see a new title as they focus on bringing more features to an already successful BF1.

Fret not, however, as an important question was posed to the CFO on further engaging players. Jorgensen was asked if they had any plans to apply the EA Sports Ultimate Team model to Battlefield, and from the executives answer it sounds like EA has plans for all of their titles.

“We’re looking at all of our games and asking, ‘How might we provided additional opportunities for the player to engage?’ The players want to engage deeply in the game.”

The executive noted that from an investors standpoint if people engage more with a game, they are more likely to spend money on it over time. Jorgensen also stated that driving engagement is EA’s main focus, and comes ahead of any monetary considerations. The most important thing with considering the Ultimate Team model was keeping the gameplay intact.

“EA is looking for ways to [deepen engagement] without disturbing the gameplay. Finding a way to add an Ultimate Team-style mode to Battlefield is overall a “great challenge” and an “exciting” one. It’s not just about building another game. If we can build another stream of revenue that’s high-profit, it’s highly accretive to the overall company.”

If this wasn’t enough to keep your interest, more exciting news came in the from of a Star Wars Battlefront 2 discussion. With buzz abound on the new films, and games being released, it’s obvious that this would be a big question. What’s to come? Jorgensen was quick to acknowledge past criticism from fans:

“If there was criticism, they just wanted more. So we’re taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had.”

With a focus on locations and characters from the original trilogy, the last Battlefront installment was packed with a lot of what fans wanted, but lacked overall depth. Jorgensen explained that with the new films, Star Wars Battlefront 2 will include new places, characters, and features giving the game a needed expansion while also reaching a wider audience. Overall it is expected that the the game will be much more exciting, and much bigger than its predecessor.

“We were really working with the old canvas of Star Wars, the old trilogy. We weren’t using any of the new materials that came out of [Episode 7] because our game actually came out slightly before the movie. Next year we’ll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that’ll make the opportunity much larger.”

Star Wars Batlefront 2 is expected to be out in fall of 2017, and being created by DICE and Motive Studios. So if you were hoping to get a chance at playing Rey, Kylo Ren, or maybe bringing your Poe/Finn bromance to life, you may not have to wait much longer! Until then, a new DLC, titled “Rogue One: Scarif”, featuring characters from the latest installment to the Star Wars franchise is set to release this month just ahead of the films release!

This is not EA’s only Star Wars game to be released however. The company is currently working on a 3rd person action adventure game with Titanfall developer Respawn. We can also expect a second game being developed by Deep Space studio, lead by Uncharted director Amy Hennig. All in all these are exciting times for the Star Wars fandom!

Whether you’re team Battlefield 1, or team Star Wars Battlefront 2, there’s lots to be excited about as EA continues to develop more engaging ways to play, and greater depth for our enjoyment. One thing is for certain, the company plans on continuing to listen to the fans as it produces content and games that bring the players what they want. So until next time, keep your blasters up and your zeppelin no smoking lights on.
