Doom GDC 2017 Panel Shows What It Takes “Bringing Hell to Life” (VIDEO)
Everything within 2016’s Doom title felt incredibly unique, yet familiar; from the game’s enemies, the weapons, soundtrack, and more. The title featured an impressive AI system which paired with the game’s full body animation that gave off a very fluid and lifelike experience. As one might expect, there were a lot of details that went into such a wonderful system – many of which fans might not even be aware of. A recent video released of id Software’s Doom GDC 2017 panel goes into detail about the method behind the madness, explaining many of the technical aspects behind the visuals players see.
The video above features id Software’s Jake Campbell opening up about the technical aspects of making 2016’s Doom and why it felt so special. Throughout the Game Developers Conference presentation, Campbell went into detail about how the AI of the game had more direct control over their character animation. He also dove deep into the varying characteristics of the title’s AI aspect and all of the different enemies players faced in-game.
The video runs about 30 minutes long and goes into various examples of how the developers succeeded reaching their goal for giving the AI more freedom. This applied to different aspects of the game such as Focus Tracking, Foot Phase Tracking, Phase Synchronization, and Bad Zones; all of which made the AI feel more natural and allowed them to preform complex maneuvers that still appeared fluid.
It’s interesting to see the process behind the incredible title unfold. Doom is currently available on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
