With Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise came what will likely be a never-ending iterations of films and spinoffs. With the latest series reaching its close, talk has come about the next series of connected films. Following those rumors comes an announcement that a series of new Star Wars films will be written and produced by the creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Episode 8 director Rain Johnson has already been tapped to create a new series of connected films of his own. While some fans are divided about the director’s choices in episode 8, it is certain that whatever direction he goes is bound to be interesting and visually stunning. Now, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of Game of Thrones are also slated to write and produce another set of new Star Wars films. Here is what the two had to say about the opportunity:

In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since… We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Given the popularity of Game of Thrones, it makes sense that Disney would want to bring them in. While controversy marked their project Confederate, it cannot be denied that the team is masterful at both storytelling and production. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kenedy agreed with this statement:

David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today… Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

There is currently no working title or release expectations for these new Star Wars films by Benioff and Weiss. More news is bound to emerge, however, as anticipation grows and the current series comes to a close. Be sure to keep up with DFTG as this story, and all news both gaming and nerdy, unfold.
