Diablo 2 Remake Reportedly Happening With Vicarious Visions
One of the most notable titles of Blizzard’s old guard, Diablo 2 continues to be a favorite for fans of the dungeon-crawler genre, with that favor maintaining even in the face of franchise follow-ups such as Diablo 3. With upcoming entries aiming to replicate the gothic atmosphere of the renowned sequel, the legacy of the 20-year-old title appears stronger than ever in 2021. However, a new report suggests the game may now also live on in the form of a full-on Diablo 2 remake.
This possibility comes from a new Bloomberg report, which claims a remade version of Diablo 2 is not only in development at Blizzard, but the project has been in the works since at least last year. Titled “Diablo 2: Resurrected,” the effort was said to be receiving assistance from former Tony Hawk and Crash Bandicoot studio Vicarious Visions, that is, according to “people familiar with the plans.” A spokesperson confirmed to the outlet that Vicarious “has been working with Blizzard for some time,” but the statement stopped short of confirming the remake’s existence.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard about a potential Diablo 2 remaster, nor the involvement of Vicarious Visions, nor even the “Resurrected” title. However, the rumored release now appears to have a bit more credence considering the developer’s confirmed move to Blizzard. After proving successful in producing worthwhile remakes, Vicarious was recently revealed to have been absorbed and repurposed by Blizzard into a support studio for future projects under the brand. If this new report rings true, Blizzard may be intent on using the studio’s prowess to bolster its own remakes, beginning with Diablo 2.
Prior to VV’s involvement in the Diablo 2 remake, Bloomberg’s sources suggest Blizzard’s Team 1, the devs responsible for Warcraft 3: Reforged, were initially chosen to head the project. However, that decision was said to have been reversed “last year,” when Reforged was thoroughly torn apart by fans for its largely unfinished state. In the time since, development was reportedly handed to the team behind Diablo 4, with additional support arriving in the form of Vicarious Visions.
