Destiny 2 Studio Has Been Working On New Games For The Past Three Years

Destiny 2 Studio

The recently passed gaming generation saw a significant shift towards the games as a service model, and perhaps no franchise became as synonymous with the model the past generation as the Destiny franchise. Destiny 2 has managed to continue to keep fans of the series returning for more, even after the split from Activision. Bungie has functioned well independently with Destiny 2, with the recently released Beyond Light expansion providing a significant amount of new content for the game, especially those joining now on next-gen consoles. Bungie fans have wondered what outside of the Destiny series that they have been working on, and now it seems that the Destiny 2 studio already started working on new games three years ago.

Metro recently released a new interview with Bungie CEO Pete Parsons regarding Destiny 2. Parsons discussed many aspects of leading Bungie, including the decisions that went into developing and managing the Destiny series, as well as the variety of positive fan responses for the game as a means of spending time with others safely this year. When asked about Bungie’s long-term commitment to Destiny 2, Parsons suggested that Bungie’s creative process regarding what a Bungie game should be has extended somewhat into developing ideas for games outside of Destiny. As he states:

So we started about three years ago, Jason and Jonny Ebbert and Zach Russell and a few of us started working on new incubations. The way to think about that is not just on new games. I think that is often the parlance people use. Actually a process around how we want to incubate the potential for new titles, but more importantly, new and amazing talent. So, we have these incubations that are a lot more about – they’re certainly about building games, but their focus is on really building teams. How do we build up teams that know how to work together and most importantly, can create magical things?”

Parsons also mentions that the Destiny 2 studio has been hiring more new employees than they had been expecting, even considering the Pandemic. Stories involving Bungie the past few years have indicated some movement on ideas other than Destiny 2. New job listings this year indicated a new “lighthearted and whimsical” title, and Bungie filed a trademark for Matter back in 2018. There’s no telling what such a new Bungie game might look like or be, but one thing is for certain, that Bungie is indeed full of game development wizards. And those wizards came from the moon.
