Chance The Rapper Pokes Fun At League Of Legends In SNL Skit (VIDEO)
For over forty years, Saturday Night Live has endured as a perennial American comedy favorite. The sketch comedy series has continued to stay relevant by continuing to satirize popular media, which has increasingly included geek favorite movies, tv and even video games. Recent years have seen the show’s comedians parody the likes of Black Panther, Game of Thrones and Fortnite. The newest SNL episode featured the return of Chance the Rapper, himself a known lover of nerd culture and video games. In one sketch from his latest appearance, Chance took the opportunity to poke fun at League of Legends and eSports culture.
Saturday Night Live recently released the new League of Legends sketch on their official YouTube channel. Many SNL and Chance fans on social media were clamoring for Mr. The Rapper to bring back his sports reporter character Lazlo Holmes, who previously struggled to understand hockey. Keeping to a similar them, the new sketch has Chance as Lazlo reporting from a League of Legends eSports event. Lazlo clearly has as little knowledge of the popular MOBA game or eSports culture, thinking League of Legends would have involved NBA legends and referring to the game as “League of Legos.”
The humor only escalates when Lazlo interviews a team captain by the name of S3x Panda 99, whose name Lazlo refuses to even attempt to say. While the sketch is somewhat looking down on eSports culture, the writers clearly did do their research by having the more knowledgeable reporters use proper League of Legends vocabulary. Chance himself is a known fan of games like Fortnite and Super Mario, so it’s possible he may have lent a hand to the research himself. Nonetheless, the sketch is quite humorous, and shows just how mainstream League of Legends has become. As they say in eSports, let’s do that eSports!
