Capcom Could Provide Street Fighter V DLC Until 2020

Street Fighter V DLC

The Street Fighter franchise is no stranger to updates for its games. Street Fighter II famously had several updated versions of the game that added additional fighters and content long before DLC was commonplace. Many who purchased Street Fighter V earlier this year understood going in that the game had what could be perceived as less content compared to previous entries in the franchise by design, as it would be a game continuously upgraded with DLC. We recently saw the completion of Season 1 of Street Fighter V DLC, but just how much more will we be getting and for how long? We may now know more about Capcom’s plans.

Street Fighter V DLC

Street Fighter V producers Yoshinori Ono and Tomoaki Ayano recently spoke with Famitsu (translated here by Event Hubs), and in the interview, they claim that Capcom plans to provide new Street Fighter V DLC until 2020. A significant aspect of this plan is that Capcom intends to solidify Street Fighter V as an eSports title. When asked whether a fighting game outside of Street Fighter is being planned by Capcom, Ono stated that:

“I’d be happy if we could. But first, we’d have to solidify Street Fighter V as an eSports title. I said in the beginning that we’ve seen a higher number of entrants than we had in the Street Fighter IV era, but we’d like to heighten that even further.”

Ono acknowledges that more support by Capcom for the eSports community translates to better sales of their games, given the ever-growing audience for eSports events. We saw Capcom recently go so far as to ban a distracting Street Fighter V stage in a big eSports tournament, if that provides any reference for how seriously Capcom now views eSports.
