Capcom Played an Important Role in Nintendo Switch Development – Driving Force Behind RAM Increase

Nintendo Switch Development

This year at the Game Creators Conference in Japan, Capcom and Nintendo joined forces on stage to discuss Nintendo Switch development among other things regarding the console’s future. While it may seem strange considering nothing has been released for the Switch yet (though there will be in the future), it turns out the company played an important role in development.

In the early stages of creating the Switch, Nintendo reached out to various developers for constructive feedback about the console. During this time, Capcom and other companies pushed for greater RAM. Because of this, the RAM was increased to 4GB during the Nintendo Switch development.

A big reason for Capcom to be so insistent on at least 4GB of ram is largely because the RE Engine needs at least that much to be supported. The engine would make it possible for Capcom’s games to be played on the Switch, including Resident Evil 7. Though no announcement has been made confirming that, it could be a possibility in the future.

Capcom has been struggling to get the engine to work with the portable and docked states of the Switch. This could be why we haven’t seen anything outside of Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers hit the announcement block for the console and could also explain a lack of Resident Evil.

It makes sense that Capcom would want to wait until their engine works properly before announcing games for the console. Having influence over the Nintendo Switch development at least means that we may see more games from the company later down the line. This, of course, depends on Capcom porting their engine to the switch. With their appearance on stage this year, it seems like we may just get our wish in the future.
