Black Ops 4 Developer Responds To Story Campaign Complaints
Last week fans got a chance to enjoy the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 event with developer Treyarch. During the presentation, the developer confirmed that Black Ops 4 would not include a single-player campaign. The company instead plans to focus on their battle royale mode Blackout, standard multiplayer, and Zombies.
While improvements to the multiplayer are a boon to many fans, some were disappointed that there would be no story mode. These concerns were addressed in a recent interview with co-studio head Dan Bunting, who spoke a bit about the upset. According to Bunting, the studio was more interested in focusing on how fans were interacting with their games:
Going back to the very beginning of Black Ops 4 development, we never had set out to make a traditional campaign. We always started from the place of, we’re going to make something different with this game that was going to be inspired by how our community was interacting with Black Ops 3 and the games over the years. We see more and more players spending more time with multiplayer and zombies, not just in the game, but out of the game, streaming and talking about it in forums. It’s generated a really huge crowd response. The decision was, we wanted to make a different style of game this time.
Throughout the course of development we tried a lot of ideas, a lot of things that challenged convention, that might be a different kind of twist on how we might think of a Call of Duty game in the past, or a Black Ops game in the past. As we did that, some things make it, some things don’t.
The game we’re representing today really represents the best of the ideas that have run through that gauntlet of game development, which is pretty typical for how we do things.”
Of course, the developer could be leaning on the fact that statistically, each year has had fewer players completing the campaign. It makes sense that Treyarch might consider putting the time and resources they would have spent in the campaign enhancing the experience that draws the majority of their fanbase. But as many fandoms have demonstrated recently, and Bunting himself acknowledged, “change is always going to be hard for people.”
Black Ops 4 will still feature solo missions that will not only give players an understanding of how to use each specialist in multiplayer but also give some backstory on those characters as well. Treyarch has also commented that there may be a campaign released after the game launches. Unfortunately we will have to wait until this Fall to see if there is enough feedback to warrant a campaign.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 arrives on October 12th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
