BioWare Reportedly Working On Major Overhaul to Anthem, Not Abandoned

Anthem Dev Responds To PS4 Shutdown Issues

Ever since Anthem’s less than impressive launch, BioWare’s live-service effort hasn’t exactly taken off, with solid flying mechanics and an interesting world failing to make a difference against underwhelming post-launch and the infamously-delayed Cataclysm world event. The repeated departure of key Anthem personnel surely hasn’t boded well for Anthem’s future, but a new report claims BioWare is currently brainstorming a plan to get the game back on track.

According to sources with Kotaku, the studio is currently underway on a substantial update dubbed “Anthem 2.0” or “Anthem Next,” suggesting it will usher in a new era for the otherworldly looter shooter. Game-changing updates in the like of No Man’s Sky’s NEXT and Destiny’s The Taken King expansion were referenced as the level of scale BioWare is attempting to overhaul Anthem–with the game’s mission structure, loot, and even the world itself likely to “change drastically” when all eventually goes live.

As of now, the exact extent of changes is still in the midst of being discussed, with the studio reportedly debating whether to release as an all-in-one update, across several patches, or in the form of a new game such as with Blizzard’s Overwatch 2. One thing that continues to be assured is that Anthem is far from being abandoned, with Kotaku saying that “dozens if not hundreds of developers” across BioWare’s Austin, Texas, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada offices are set on giving the game a worthwhile new lease on life.

One unnamed dev was quoted in reference to the extreme undertaking, with months of work said to have been poured into the Anthem Next project already and even more “rebuilding” still being suggested for the foreseeable future. “We spent a few months just tearing it down and figuring out what needed to change fundamentally (a lot),” they said. “And we’ve been rebuilding for another few months since.”

Anthem is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
