Beyond Good & Evil Creator Michel Ancel Responds To Toxicity Allegations

Director Michel Ancel

Ubisoft has had a lot of attention on them the past few months, and unfortunately, a lot of it has not been pertaining to new video games. The publisher has received numerous allegations that many important figures in the company have engaged in toxic inappropriate behavior, including Chief Creative Officer Serge Hascoet and VP Tommy Francois, both of whom have since resigned from their positions due to the allegations. Recently, Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel announced his retirement from the games industry, with several sources reporting a history of toxicity. Now, Ancel has responded to these allegations.

Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel recently shared his response on his Instagram account to reports written about him by French outlet Libération alleging harassment and toxic management practices on Ancel’s account. It seems that Ancel is adamant that Libération has been falsely misinformed and has not reported the truth of the situation.

“Publish the news fast so that it combines with sexual harassment from other news at Ubisoft,” Michel Ancel said. “Is this serious? Is this what you expect from a national newspaper. I will fight for the truth because such accusations are a shame. I worked hard on every of my projects and always had respect for the teams.”

Michel Ancel further suggests that he hasn’t directly managed his team, and that he communicates a vision that gets implemented by the producers and managers of the different departments. He suggests that Libération has not done the work of reporting on these other managers. Ancel also refutes other information reported by Libération regarding the city created for Beyond Good and Evil 2, as well as the 2018 demo for the game.

As of writing, Libération has not provided an update in response to Ancel’s new statements. Hopefully their follow-up presents some additional objective truth, although sometimes situations like these truly can be complex and beyond the binary nature of good and evil.
