Bayonetta 3 Casts Mass Effect’s FemShep As Bayonetta

The Nintendo Switch has continued to find success thanks in no small part to its high-quality first-party content. Nintendo has also had a part in backing exclusive games for their platform, with one of the biggest examples in recent years being the Bayonetta series. After funding Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U, Nintendo has specifically backed Bayonetta 3 to serve as a Switch-exclusive experience. While much of the same talent has been set to return, rumors and signs pointed towards the original voice of Bayonetta not returning. Now, it has been confirmed that there is a new Bayonetta voice in town that gamers might be familiar with.

Game Informer recently shared a new cover story for their magazine which focuses on the release of Bayonetta 3. The piece focuses on many aspects of the new Bayonetta game, but one particular detail (via Nintendo Everything) has been revealed by the story regarding the game’s voice actress for Bayonetta. It would seem that Bayonetta is now being portrayed by none other than Jennifer Hale, replacing the previous voice artist, Helena Taylor. As for why this switch occurred, the story states:

“Various overlapping circumstances made it difficult for Hellena Taylor to reprise her role. We held auditions to cast the new voice of Bayonetta and offered the role to Jennifer Hale, whom we felt was a good match for the character. I understand the concerns some fans have about the voice change at this point in the series, but Jennifer’s performance was way beyond what we could have imagined. I’m confident that her portrayal of Bayonetta will exceed our fans’ expectations.”

No specific reasons for Taylor’s inability to return are given, but Taylor had previously suggested last year that they might not be returning. Gamers will likely be familiar with Jennifer Hale as the voice of Commander Shepard, a.k.a. FemShep, from the Mass Effect trilogy of games. Her other gaming credits include the voice of Sarah Palmer in Halo and Ashe in Overwatch. While this recasting may disappoint some fans, many have noticed that Hale’s Bayonetta voice sounds somewhat indistinguishable from Taylor’s. Hale has been praised before for her voice-matching abilities, but this is a spell-level mastery of her skill.

Bayonetta 3 releases on October 28th exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
