Battleborn Free-to-Play as of Today – Bonus Content for Owners (VIDEO)

Battleborn free-to-play

Battleborn is the hero shooter/MOBA from Gearbox that dropped in May of last year. Due to some stiff competition in Blizzard’s offering of the same variety that also came out in May of last year, it hasn’t been entirely successful. While there are still devoted fans, some have gone on to proclaim the player base as dead. Luckily, Gearbox has come up with a way to maybe bring more attention to their shooter by making Battleborn free-to-play.

In an announcement by Gearbox, it was revealed that Battleborn would be offering a free trial beginning today. Since there is no end date, it is assumed that this is their way of saying the game is now free, but not the entire title. Players of the trial will have unlimited access to competitive multiplayer modes, maps without time limits, and level caps. Six out of the 30 heroes will be available to players, with each week bringing a new random set. This is not uncommon in free-to-play MOBA titles. Thankfully, progress will be saved so those diving into the Battleborn free trial will be able to pick up where they left off when the heroes come back around.

A new matchmaking queue is being introduced for those new to the game. This, of course, is to prevent any lopsided matches. After a player reaches level 20, the queue will reset to the normal one. There will also be new training modes so players can check out all 30 heroes without waiting for them to circle back around in the Battleborn free trial. This isn’t all that those new to the game will have access to. “Players can unlock heroes, customizations for your favorite hero, experience boosters, or even the Story Mode Operations in the Marketplace individually.” You’ll be able to acquire these with credits that have been earned in-game or with Platinum premium currency. Here’s what will be up for grabs:

  • Battleborn Heroes
  • Cosmetics skins and taunts
  • Gear packs
  • XP and Loot Boosters
  • Additional Loadouts and Bank pages
  • Story Operations, individually or as part of the Season Pass bundle
  • Battle Passes to access private matches

Those who already own the game will now be referred to as “Founders” and they will be receiving a plethora of goodies to offset the cost that they have already paid. This will include “Legendary Gear, 1,000 Platinum, 50,000 Credits, Loot Packs and more, plus an exclusive “Founder’s Crown” Flair item.” These items will be offered to anyone that purchased the game before the Battleborn free trial began on June 6, 2017. A full game upgrade will still be available for purchase if players wish to acquire Battleborn after trying it. As of now, the cost will remain $30 and it will include the 25 original heroes, eight story missions, the prologue, and unlimited access to private matches. It will also carry over any progression made in the free trial if the game is purchased. It’s unfortunate that the title didn’t do as well as hoped, but it is great to see that Gearbox is not giving up on Battleborn or its fans. The free trial is available now on Steam and Xbox One. PlayStation 4 players in the Americas also have it for free as of today, but those in Japan and Europe will have to wait until June 13.
