Anthem Won’t Have A “Massively Branching Story,” Says BioWare

Anthem

When you think of Anthem in the context of other BioWare games, it really seems like an outlier. A Destiny-style shoot n’ loot game that focuses primarily around PvE encounters with your friends, doesn’t really sound like other titles the studio has produced in the past. Games like Mass Effect, Knights of The Old Republic, and Dragon Age had a heavy focus on story and the player’s agency in how the plot pans out.

Will you be a shining example of benevolence and selflessness in the face of strife and hardship? Or will you embrace a cold, calculated personality type for your hero and get the job done by any means necessary? Your choices in older BioWare games felt like they mattered and they impacted the world your character inhabited in a big way.

VG247’s Kirk McKeand got his hands on a demo of Anthem during Gamescom 2018 and tried to get a little more clarity from BioWare reps regarding how story will play into this new experience. Game Director John Warner told McKeand:

There will be player choice. I think that Anthem, being a shared world social RPG, we’re focusing less on a massively branching story and more on making it a more personal narrative. There’s definitely choices in there that you’re making, but the focus is a little bit different for this game.”

The design choice is understandable considering there will be a lot of players sharing one single play space, so having world-changing consequences would be very tough to implement in a meaningful way. BioWare says they will circumvent this by having limited time events that will mix up things in a “surprising” fashion.
