PlayStation Classic: The 10 Classic Games That Should Have Made the Cut

PlayStation Classic Datamining Reveals List Of Rejected Games

Sony recently revealed the full lineup of the 20 games included within the upcoming PlayStation Classic, a mini console jam packed with the promise of fun and nostalgia. While veritable classics such as Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and Twisted Metal made the cut, many other titles didn’t, some of which easily deserved a spot next to these classic PS1 titans. Here, we take a look at 10 of the classic games that didn’t make the cut, and why they should have.

Spider-Man

First up on our list is none other than Activision’s Spider-Man. Released back in 2000, this is the first entry in which we felt like we were actually the wall-crawler himself, swinging through the city and beating up bad guys to our heart’s content. With the recent release of Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 game, this would have been a perfect way for fans to see how far we’ve come, while reveling in the simple yet elegant gameplay of the past.

The Legend of Dragoon

Not only does The Legend of Dragoon deserve a spot on the PlayStation Classic lineup, it also deserves a spot on the list of games that deserve remakes. Released in 1999 by Sony Interactive Entertainment, The Legend of Dragoon featured phenomenal storytelling, as well as some complex elements in the form of ‘additions’ that added some interactive layers into the title’s standard turn-based gameplay. With the game’s impressive world building and deep characters (yes, even Kongol),  The Legend of Dragoon should absolutely have been put onto the PlayStation Classic, if at the very least on the RPG-heavy Japanese version of the console.

Crash Team Racing

Crash Team Racing holds a special place in the hearts of many, particularly in those that sunk hours into the original trilogy. Developed by Naughty Dog and released in 1999, CTR was the closest thing PS1 owners were going to get to Mario Kart 64, with an interesting cast of characters and similar gameplay that kept gamers coming back for more.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3

While Sony covered its snowboarding entry into the PlayStation Classic with Cool Boarders 2, skateboarding fans were unfortunately left out in the cold. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 was released back in 2001 for multiple consoles, though it still deserves a spot on the list thanks to developer NeverSoft’s work in distilling everything great about the first two games and plunking it into this one. If the skateboarding and kick flipping everywhere doesn’t take you back, the soundtrack certainly would.

Tomb Raider II

The second entry in the iconic Tomb Raider series, Tomb Raider II – released in 1997 – built upon the original game, implementing loads of new weapons, moves for Lara, and vehicles. While the original game didn’t gain much traction (nobody knew who Lara Croft was, yet), Tomb Raider II ended up being one of the best selling games ever by the time 2003 rolled around. We can still see the influence Tomb Raider has had on modern games today, namely within the Uncharted series and, of course, the rebooted Tomb Raider series by Crystal Dynamics.

Suikoden II

Released in 1998, the Konami JRPG featured a massive cast of characters and a huge, sprawling story, and has since become a cult classic. While Suikoden II is one of the lesser known titles on this list, that is precisely why it should be included in the PlayStation Classic console, so more people will get the chance to experience this gem of a game. Many still consider it to be their favorite game of all time, and Suikoden II is often considered as one of the best console RPGs to have ever been released. The game also features the villain Luca Blight, whose ferocity and tenacity is considered to be on par with Final Fantasy VI’s Kefka.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

It is hard to argue with the validity of this entry. A marked departure from the previous games in the series, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – originally released in 1997 – is often considered to be one of the best video games ever made. The title has spawned numerous offshoots, and is featured in the recently announced Castlevania Requiem bundle alongside Rondo of Blood. Netflix is also working on season 3 of its series adaptation of Castlevania.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Despite there already being another Final Fantasy game on the PlayStation Classic roster, Final Fantasy Tactics is still a worthy addition to this list. The title is a built-in lesson on how to create a strategy game, and the tale told between Ramza and Delita certainly deserves retelling for a new generation of gamers. Despite there being a few re-releases of Final Fantasy Tactics since it first came out in 1997, it is still hard to beat playing through the original.

Worms Armageddon

Don’t get us wrong, modern battle royale games are great, but have you ever broken your friend’s spirit when they were a worm? I think not. Released in 1999, the artillery turn-based game was a true test of one’s friendships, wherein players can control an assortment of worms in an epic battle against the AI, or another player-controlled team. The cartoony violence was a staple of the 90’s, and the third entry in the Worms saga is considered to be one of the best in the series. Naming your worms after your favorite video game characters was also an important – if under-advertised – aspect of the game.

Chrono Cross

Many of you reading this may have expected to see Chrono Cross somewhere on the list. While this entry makes the list a bit RPG-heavy, the sequel to Squaresoft’s Chrono Trigger sees the player traversing parallel worlds in what many consider to be one of the greatest RPGs to have ever been released. The massive replayability of the game thanks to its multiple endings and its open-ended story cements itself as a worthy choice for the last entry in our list of PlayStation Classic games.

Community Pick: Dino Crisis

We’ve just one more worthy entry to this list, this time thanks to the gamer community that has been vocal about Dino Crisis not being included on the PlayStation Classic. Capcom’s other survival horror series, Dino Crisis was oft-times referred to as “Resident Evil with dinosaurs,” though the game utilized an original real-time engine with 3D environments rather than pre-rendered backgrounds. Despite its lack of variety in the dinosaurs, Dino Crisis is a highly beloved game and one certainly deserving of a spot on the PlayStation Classic roster.
