DFTG Recaps The Latest Movie/TV Trailers: November 5th (VIDEO)
With another week comes a new pile of trailers to point our collective eyeballs at. Making up for the horror-focused previews from last time, the universe has now bestowed a bevy of lighter fare this time around, with trailers featuring the feelsy How to Train Your Dragon threequel, Kurt Russell’s magical Santa in The Christmas Chronicles, and an initial look at Henry Cavill in The Witcher TV series. Check out the list below as we recap the biggest movie and TV trailers of the week.
Spies in Disguise
With the James Bond franchise on a hiatus of sorts, the role of international super-spy is currently open for the taking. The likes of Kingsman and Mission Impossible have meanwhile attempted to bring the espionage game to spectacular new heights, but Will Smith is looking to go even further to fly above the rest. In Spies in Disguise, he turns into a pigeon.
Okay, it doesn’t seem like the best plan, but there’s probably some missing context as to why bird form would be preferable. Well, “preferable” may be the wrong word as Smith doesn’t seem too happy with his feathery transformation, evidenced by his extended and hilarious squawky scream. Despite all the goofiness, Spies in Disguise does seem like a slick animation to look forward to when September 13th, 2019 rolls around.
The Christmas Chronicles
With the happy holiday season on the way, the timeless tale of Christmas is getting a modern revamp in The Christmas Chronicles thanks to the elves at the Netflix workshop. Kurt Russell utilizes his endless charm and god-tier beard prowess to become the jolly man in red Santa Claus, an odd turn that seems almost too perfect based on the film’s newest trailer.
When two kids discover St. Nick’s night of gift-giving has gone awry, they’re forced to utilize any measure possible to get Christmas Eve back on track. Sure this plot shares plenty in common with other classic Santa films such as The Santa Clause and Elf, but The Christmas Chronicles looks nonetheless like it’d be a fun time when it premieres on netflix November 22nd.
The Witcher – New Series

The announcement of a big-budget Netflix series based on the world of The Witcher has been a delight for both gamers and aficionados of the original novels. Much of the show’s main cast has been revealed over the past few months, with the magic-wielding, silver-haired protagonist Geralt of Rivia being portrayed by none other than Superman actor Henry Cavill.
The first footage of Cavill sporting the full Geralt getup was recently shown off in a short video, but the interpretation admittedly hasn’t inspired the best confidence from fans. However, with such a small peek at what will amount to many hours in the final product, perhaps it’s too early to judge whether these frames are worthy of The Witcher mythos. The Witcher is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2019.
Dogs – New Series
“Who’s a good boy?” is a question many a pupper-owner finds themselves exclaiming on a regular basis, and now Netflix aims to actually provide an answer in a new documentary series titled Dogs. Over six installments, the stories of several good boys from all over the world are set to be told, sharing each of the respective bonds between canines and their people. Doggo companions acting as service animals, involved in pet grooming, or just good old fashioned best friends are given the spotlight, likely delighting anyone lucky enough to have a lovable pup in their life. Dogs begins streaming on Netflix on November 16th.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
The high-flying dragon-riding exploits of Hiccup and Toothless are about to meet their ultimate finale in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, ending the story featured across the series’ numerous movies, tv shows, and video games. This last adventure will finally reveal the origins of the vikings’ fire-breathing buddies as well as introduce the new female “Light Fury” species.
However, with appearance of a new enemy threatening to take out dragonkind for good, everyone’s only hope would seem to lie in finding the legendary lost realm of the dragons. How will it all end? If this is anything like the previous films, it’ll result in a monsoon of my own tears. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World flies into theaters on February 22nd, 2019.
Bohemian Rhapsody
The life of legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is nothing short of remarkable and the film Bohemian Rhapsody has tasked itself with telling the flamboyant performer’s story with Mr. Robot actor Rami Malek. Through the lens of Freddie and his bandmates, the film follows Queen’s humble beginnings, it’s epic success, and ultimate history-making performance at Live Aid in 1985.
From the trailers put out so far, Malek seems to have nailed Mercury’s look and general mannerisms to the point where it’s downright spooky, let alone incredible to watch. Whether the rest of the film will live up to Freddie’s portrayal is still up in the air, but we can all judge for ourselves as Bohemian Rhapsody is currently in theaters.
Bird Box
Anyone who’s seen A Quiet Place knows the merits (or demerits) of sound-based scares, the film often bursting with creep-factor because of it. Netflix’s upcoming film Bird Box seems to have that same thrilling idea in mind, except this case employs (or unemploys) the visual sense of sight.
When the world is invaded by mysterious fear-inducing creatures, characters in the film are forced to wear blindfolds to keep the maddening dread at bay. However, this puts Sandra Bullock and company in the thick of the emerging apocalypse with little more than those lovely sound-based scares to greet them. Oh, joy. Bird Box hits Netflix on December 21st.
Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us
The second entry Pokémon’s rebooted movie series may have premiered in Japan earlier this year, but Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us has now solidified its release westward and celebrated that development with a lovely new trailer. The debuting footage presents Ash and Pikachu’s new adventure in Fula City as the wind-powered metropolis experiences an inexplicable disaster.
With the wind no longer on their side, Ash, his new friends, and the legendary Lugia are called upon to protect the city utilizing nothing less than the power of friendship, of course! Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us sees a limited release in theaters on November 24th, 26th, 28th, and December 1st.
