Dead Rising Studio Officially Closed By Capcom

Dead Rising Studio Officially Closed As Capcom Anticipates Losses

It looks like the dead are staying dead for the foreseeable future. Following reported staff cuts earlier this year, Capcom has officially announced the closure of their Vancouver studio behind the Dead Rising franchise. The decision comes in the midst of development on a 5th entry in the open-world zombie series, effectively putting the project in cancellation.

Capcom themselves broke the news earlier today, citing the expectation of sizable losses over the next six months, specifically from “the termination of development projects” in the amount of 4.5 billion yen, or just over $40 million USD. In the wake of these expensive “terminations,” Capcom is reviewing “the allocation of its development resources” to support the creation of “world-class content.”

Capcom laid off Dead Rising

Further clarifying with Variety, Capcom called the Vancouver studio’s closure a necessary step for the company’s “efficiency and growth,” with concentration now moving to the “development of major titles in Japan.” The office’s over 150 employees are to be laid off “effective today,” with Capcom sending severance packages to each leaving member of staff.

We appreciate the hard work and contributions of all the studio team members in creating unforgettable gameplay experiences for the ‘Dead Rising’ series and ‘Puzzle Fighter,'” said the Capcom representative.

The closure of the major studio behind Dead Rising is unfortunate for the team involved but also for the planned 5th game in the series, as it likely won’t ever see the light of day. The future of Dead Rising is currently in the hands of Capcom, so the franchise could theoretically see resurrection eventually. However, its recent cancellation may suggest it isn’t very high in their list of priorities.
