Will Smith in Talks to Portray the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin Remake
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast remake has been making mountains of money around the globe since it released earlier this year. This success has undoubtedly pushed the company to confidently move forward with their planned Aladdin remake with casting calls being held as early as last month. The original film’s role of Genie, made iconic by the late and great Robin Williams, has always been a role no person could seem to fill. Now, according to a recent report, Disney is looking at none other than the Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, to fill the phenomenally cosmic role.
According to Deadline, the Suicide Squad actor is in negotiations for the magical role of the Genie, but nothing is set in stone at this time. These kind of talks could go either way, as Smith was previously approached for Disney’s previously announced Dumbo remake as well, but it seems those plans have fallen apart. Aladdin and Dumbo are only a few of the numerous animated properties Disney plans to modernize in the near future with adaptations of The Lion King, Mulan, and Winnie the Pooh all on the horizon.
One thing is for sure, Will Smith definitely has the charisma and required musical chops to portray the larger-than-life Genie having rose to fame as a rapper under the guise of the Fresh Prince. Still, Robin Williams’ classic version of the character has been considered one of the best voice performances of all time, so Smith definitely has a large pair of shoes to fill if he’s indeed chosen for the role.
