Mel Gibson in Talks with Warner Brothers to Direct Suicide Squad 2

Suicide Squad 2

Though the 2016 release Suicide Squad did not score big with the critics, among the fans and box office it was deemed a huge success. The Villain-centric movie did so well that a sequel has been fast tracked by Warner Brother Studios leaving the role of director currently open. Mel Gibson, after recently turning his luck around with Oscar-nominated war movie Hacksaw Ridge, is now currently in talks with Warner Brothers for the seat at the helm of Suicide Squad 2.

With the recent release of Suicide Squad, Director David Ayer has moved on to a new project within the DC family. Gotham City Sirens focuses on the female villains of the DC universe and with that film project underway, Ayer will not be available to direct the follow up to Suicide Squad. No contract has yet been announced for Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2, partly in that Gibson is taking some time to familiarize himself with the material and narrative of Suicide Squad.

At this time Warner Bros is not putting all their eggs in one basket, so to speak, as far as directors are concerned. With Suicide Squad 2 being placed on a fast track for production, Warner Bros has decided to take an active stance and has compiled a list of alternate prospects to direct the new film. Included in their list of prospects are names such as Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Easy Money), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad, 30 Minutes or Less, ), and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, The Night Before, 50/50).
