Jude Law Cast as Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts Sequel
It has just been revealed that two-time Oscar nominee Jude Law has been cast as Albus Dumbledore in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In the highly-anticipated sequel, which begins filming this summer, Law will portray a young Dumbledore that is still decades away from becoming the Headmaster at Hogwarts. As it stands, during the time period that takes place in Fantastic Beasts, the beloved character is currently the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor. Dumbledore was briefly mentioned in the latter half of Fantastic Beasts, when protagonist Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, revealed that he had been expelled from Hogwarts due to an incident that involved a magical creature. Dumbledore was the only professor that argued against his expulsion.
Returning director David Yates, who previously directed the final four Harry Potter films and Fantastic Beasts, is very excited to be working with Jude Law, alongside returning cast members Eddie Redmayne and Johnny Depp. In a statement, Yates expresses his confidence in Law’s ability to bring young Albus Dumbledore to life on the big screen.
“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I’ve long admired and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”
Jude Law has been a very busy actor, as of late. His most recent part was in the titular and starring role of the HBO drama The Young Pope, which ended its first season in November 2016. Law is also heading to the big screen next month as King Vortigern, the villain in the upcoming Guy Ritchie film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
