PS5 Free Game Trials Are Being Tested By Sony

It looks like Sony is testing free game trials on the PlayStation 5. Not unlike the disc-based game demos of old, the trials will allow players to test out existing and upcoming PS5 games in order to determine if it’s something they’d be interested in buying. The system isn’t without its issues, though, as some players are already finding that their free game time is being truncated due to the trial period starting before the game is even downloaded.

The news comes by way of the folks over at Eurogamer, which reported that the PS5 free game trial feature is currently only available in the UK. If that’s not restrictive enough, the list of free game trials currently spans across an entire two games: Death Stranding: Director’s Cut and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The amount of allotted time for the PS5 free game trials appears to vary from game to game. Those looking to test out Death Stranding: Director’s Cut are given up to six hours of gameplay, while those testing out Sackboy: A Big Adventure are only given five hours.

Unfortunately, the free game trial period actually starts from the moment players choose “Download Trial” on their console, or “Add To Library” from the browser-based PlayStation Store. This means that those looking to test out the game will need to opt into the trial, download it immediately, and get playing before the time runs out. This will likely change at some point in the future to accommodate folks on a busy schedule, but, at least for now this is a step in the right direction.
