Sealed Super Mario 64 Becomes Most Expensive Game Ever At Auction
There are often bizarre items that have gone to auction in recent years and have been sold for insane amounts of money. Rare video games have become especially big on the market, with some selling at especially steep price tags. One such auction featuring a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 was recently sold and now holds the record for the most expensive video game.
Recently sold by Heritage Auctions, the sealed copy of Super Mario 64 went for an astounding $1.56 million. The listing shows the game was graded by an appraisal company called Wata and given a score of 9.8 A++, a nearly perfect score. It’s wild to think a game in cardboard box that originally came out all the way back in 1996 could remain in a near mint condition after all these years, so it makes sense that the title ended up selling for so much. Even more surprising is that it beat out a rare copy of The Legend of Zelda that recently sold for $870,000, breaking the previous record set by Super Mario Bros. on NES. In the end, neither was a match for the near-perfect copy of Super Mario 64.
Moving over 11 million copies during its lifetime, Super Mario 64 isn’t exactly a rare game, but it certainly is a marvel for the era of the N64. Considering this high-profile auction, the game clearly holds a dear place in players’ hearts and there’s certainly no price tag on the sheer joy that it brought fans over the years. How much money would you be willing to spend on a collectors item like a rare video game? What title do you think could beat the new record for most expensive video game of all time? Let us know your thoughts on the wild price tag on a near perfect copy of Super Mario 64 and more in the comments section below.
