Bethesda Officially Acquired By Microsoft

Xbox Phil Spencer Bethesda

It has been months in the works, but the historic deal that is ZeniMax Media being acquired by Microsoft has officially come to fruition. The deal, which includes a staggering amount of money, will add the likes of Bethesda, Tango Gameworks, Arkane, and more to the Xbox team, and Phil Spencer has touched on what that may mean for the future.

In a post over on the Xbox Wire, Xboss Phil Spencer officially welcomed Bethesda and everybody to the team. “Now that everything is official, we can begin working together to deliver more great games to everyone,” Spencer said. “At every step building toward this moment, I’ve been inspired and motivated by the creativity, insight, and community-first approach of the talented people at Bethesda. Our goal is to give these teams the best foundation for doing their greatest work and to learn from them as we continue to build Xbox into an inclusive platform for all players.”

Of course, one thing that has been a hot topic since the deal was announced has been exclusivity. With Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, Roundhouse Studios, and ZeniMax Online Studios now under the Xbox umbrella, fans are wondering what that means for games that will be coming from these developers. Many believe Microsoft did not just spend billions of dollars not to make games exclusive, while others believe they’d lose out on money by making them Xbox-only. While Spencer didn’t provided the clearest of answers, he did note that “some” future titles will be exclusive to PC and Xbox.

With the addition of the Bethesda creative teams, gamers should know that Xbox consoles, PC, and Game Pass will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.”

We don’t know exactly what this means for all games coming from Bethesda and others. Does this mean that the “some” are the unannounced games and ones that are already known about will proceed as planned? Does this means that some unannounced games will also be playable on PlayStation in the future? Honestly, there is no telling until Microsoft is able to provide a definitive answer.
